Zip Hardware Installation
INSTALLING INTO A FLOPPY BAY:
1. Turn off the computer.
2. Remove the case cover.
✔ Place the screws where you can find them!
3. Pop out the 3.5” panel just below your Floppy Disk Drive (FDD). It should be
a single 3.5” Front panel cover covering an unused FDD bay.
4. Disconnect the cables running to your FDD for better access.
✔ Your FDD cable running from the Mainboard to the FDD has a red stripe.
Remember which side of the FDD it goes to!!!
➥ If it goes to the side where the power cable connects it is an Standard Alps
FDD.
➥ If it goes to the side away from your power cable connector it is a Panasonic.
➥ I recommend marking a tick mark on your FDD to indicate where the red stripe
goes.
➥ If all else fails call IBS we usually have your original configuration on
file.
5. Remove the Floppy mounting cage. It is normally secured by a single screw.
✔ Remember to save the screw where it can be easily located.
6. Insert the Zip drive into the lower bay. It should be just below (sometimes
above) the existing FDD. Be sure and line it up exactly as your existing FDD is.
7. Screw in the drive with the four zip drive mounting screws.
8. Push the mounting cage with the FDD and Zip Drives back into place. Never
force it into place as it may damage the front FDD and Zip Drive covers.
☞ If you have difficulty inserting the drives back into place check the
following.
❶ Did you forget to remove the front panel piece covering the zip drive hole
(see step 3)?
❷ Are you correctly inserting the mounting cage. It normally slides into place.
Difficulty might indicate you are missing the cage tracks?
❸ Did you bend one of the cage tracks to slide it into position?
❹ Are you attempting to slide the drive where there is no front panel slot? This
ocassisionally occurs with Acer Mid-Tower cases?
9. Screw on the mounting cage.
10. Reconnect the FDD power cable and cable connector (make sure the red stipe
goes to pin 1. See step #4).
11. Connect the Zip drive to the HDD cable.
! Remember the red stripe always goes to the side with the power supply plug-in
(only FDDs can be different).
☞ If the zip drive is set as a Slave and the HDD as a master. The Zip drive goes
on the end of the cable and the HDD in the middle of the cable.
☞ If the zip drive is the only drive connected on the cable connect it to the
end of the cable.
12. Turn on your PC (don’t place the cover back on yet). Install the software
and test the zip drive.
☞ Please note that if when you turn on your PC the FDD light remains green and
does not go out you connected the cable backwards. Turn off the cable and turn
it around the other way. See step #4.
13. If all goes well, shut down your PC System and install the case cover.
☞ Please note that the zip drive has additional software located on the zip
disk. You may want to install these optional utilities.
