IBM Description
- The IBM 4230 Printer provides customers with a family of
heavy-duty serial impact matrix printers capable of printing up to
375 or 480 characters per second (CPS) depending on model. This
family of printers may be used as primary printers for small AS/400
(R) systems and as workstation printers in larger AS/400s, in
System/370 (TM) environments, and in System/390 (TM) environments.
- The 4230 Printer combines the versatility and high reliability
of the 4224 Printer with superior price/performance and exclusive
design features, including one of the lowest noise levels of any
tabletop printer in its speed and price range. Ease-of-use features
like an 80-character liquid crystal display (LCD) operator panel make
setup and daily operations more efficient by providing prompts and
menu selections. An automatic forms-thickness adjustment sets the
gap between print head and paper precisely, eliminating a user task
and improving paper handling and print-head life. New forms-handling
features include the dual-purpose module (DPM), which combines highly
reliable feeding of continuous forms and minimal paper waste with the
document-on-demand (DOD) tearoff function. An optional automatic
sheet feed (ASF) provides automatic feeding of cut sheets.
- Some models support advanced printing functions available
through the intelligent printer data stream (IPDS), while maintaining
compatibility with the 4224 Printer. Other models support the SCS
(PDS) data stream and are compatible with the 4214 Printer and
earlier 3268/3287 Printers.
- Four models of the 4230 are announced today, as follows:
o Model 101 -- 375 CPS, twinaxial, SCS
o Model 102 -- 480 CPS, twinaxial, IPDS
o Model 201 -- 375 CPS, coaxial, SCS
o Model 202 -- 480 CPS, coaxial, IPDS
- Planned Availability Date: March 6, 1992.
- IBM Support withdrawal circa 2001
