- 1240 Printer Installation Instructions for
a Win9x PC System
- Boot your PC, open the Windows operating
system and keep all applications closed.
- Insert the Brother CD-ROM, label side up,
into your CD-ROM drive. The CD-ROM will automatically begin to
load.
- An introductory display will appear on the
computer screen, welcoming you to the Brother Printer
Installation. If the screen does not appear, click Start and
choose Run, enter the CD drive letter and type START.EXE.
- Select the MODEL NUMBER (HL-1240 or HL-1250)
- Select LANGUAGE (English)
- Click on OK
- Click on INSTALL DRIVER
- At the bottom of the dialog box, click on
INSTALL. At this point, a Brother Laser Printer Utilities dialog
box pops up. Depending on your monitor and PC settings, it is
possible that the Utilities dialog box may not be visible. If
this occurs, proceed with the installation
- In the Printer Wizard dialog box, click on
NEXT.
- A dialog box appears with the Q: "How is this
printer attached?" Choose local or network printer, depending on
your system. Click NEXT again.
- Click on HAVE DISK, then click on BROWSE.
- Under DRIVES, select the appropriate CD-ROM
drive (such as D:\) for your system. In the same dialog box,
double click on DRIVER.
- Double click on the FOLDER HL-1240 (or
HL-1250), then double click on the FOLDER Win31_95, then the
FOLDER Local1*.
- Double click on DISK1 and click OK.
- A new dialog box appears stating: "Insert the
manufacturer's installation disk and click OK". Click OK (the
CD-ROM should already be in the drive.)
- Now the Add Printer Wizard dialog box
appears, showing the Manufacturer's name (BROTHER) and the
model. Click on NEXT.
- The next question prompts you for information
to configure the port. LPT1 is highlighted. Click NEXT.
- Printer name now reflects BROTHER HL-1240 (or
HL-1250). Click on FINISH. At this point, the files will start
to copy and the message: INSTALLING BROTHER DRIVER will appear
on your screen.
- A new dialog box appears stating "Do you want
to install True Type compatible fonts?" Click YES to install the
list of fonts that is already highlighted; click CONTINUE to
finish installing the fonts.
- A dialog box appears prompting you to "Select
path name." The path is already entered, click OK and then
FINISH. (You also have the option to click NO if you do not want
the fonts installed).
- This completes the installation of the
driver, and you have a choice of printing a demo page or
exiting.
- The CD-ROM can now be removed from the disk
drive. It is not necessary to restart Windows.
*Please note: FOLDER Local1 contains
the English, German, French and Dutch printer driver. FOLDER
Local2 has the English, Swedish, Norwegian, Italian and
Spanish printer driver.

a WinNT Machine

- All the LEDs illuminate
- Check the following
- Is the printer is in sleep mode? If yes,
press the control panel button to wake up the printer.
- Alarm LED Lit
- Check and see if the Lid is completely Shut.
- Alarm and Ready LEDs Blinking
- Check for paper Jam
- Check that the paper is properly inserted into the paper
cassette or manual feed slot.
- The printer prints unexpectedly and/or prints garbage.
- Check the following:
- Cycle power to the printer then test it again.
- Is the printer cable damaged or broken? If so,
replace and try again.
- Are you using a parallel interface switching
device? Test the printer without the device.
- Is the correct printer driver is selected in your
Windows Printer panel?
- Turn off printer status reporting in the device
options tab in the printer driver.
- The Print Speed is very slow.
- Check that:
- In case your PC is set as ECP=OFF, please change the
setting to ECP=ON.
- Activating Win95 ECP
- Click on START. Highlight SETTINGS.
- Highlight CONTROL PANEL and click.
- Double-click on SYSTEM.
- Click on the DEVICE MANAGER tab.
- Highlight PORTS and double-click on
PORTS.
- Highlight PRINTER PORT and
double-click on ECP PORT.
- Click on Driver.
- Click on Change Driver.
- Click on Show All Devices.
- Highlight ECP PRINTER PORT.
- Highlight Printer Port (listed under
Models).
- Click on OK.
- Activating Win98 ECP
- Click on START. Highlight SETTINGS.
- Highlight CONTROL PANEL and click.
- Double-click on SYSTEM.
- Click on the DEVICE MANAGER tab.
- Highlight PORTS and double-click on
PORTS.
- Highlight PRINTER PORT and
double-click on ECP PORT.
- Click on Driver.
- Click on UPDATE DRIVER
- Click on NEXT
- Select DISPLAY A LIST OF ALL THE
DRIVERS IN A SPECIFIC LOCATION ,SO YOU CAN SELECT THE
DRIVER YOU WANT.
- Click on NEXT
- Click on Show All Devices.
- Highlight ECP PRINTER PORT.
- Click NEXT
- Click NEXT
- Follow the instructions.
